Heritage Day History

The Heritage Day Festival and Parade is a "grassroots" community affair that takes place annually during Heritage Month.  In 1996, the Heritage Day event received a proclamation from San Diego City Officials declaring the last Saturday of every February as "Heritage Day" for all cultures.

Its rich tradition and history have become a positive addition to community events both socially and economically in the heart of San Diego.  We are pleased to announce the last Saturday in February as "Heritage Day" for all cultures.  We take pride in careful planning of this parade for you and your family to enjoy.

Offering a reputable platform to bridge gaps between the consumers, community organizations and businesses-small and large-with an ultimate goal of bringing economical and social revitalization to the constituent communities.  By uniting spectators of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, this widely publicized family event encloses an audience in the “Heritage Village” with attendance of over 11,000 individuals.

The Heritage Day Festival and Parade was founded in 1991 under the non-profit organization, Nu-Way Operation BHILD,  Black History is Learning Development program and by Native San Diegans, Steve & Peggy Cooper.

Concluding the Parade, you'll be able to take part in the Heritage Day events, which are designed to build the community in which it serves. There are always many free activities for the entire family to enjoy. You'll find everything from children's activities, educational resources and entertainment from groups of all cultural backgrounds.
